I researched the tune recently for Steve Gardham and came up with the traditional tune for "Sit you merry" as "Chestnut or (Jack) Doves Figary" in Playfords' Dancing Master' from the 1st (1651) edition. The modern tune is that arranged Samuel Wesley and published 1815 which has the difference in that it uses the natural minor and Playford's is in the melodic minor mode, with raised 6th degrees, however the cadences are reminiscent of Doves Figary. A part only of Doves Figary could be based upon 'The Flatt Pavanne' in 'Fitzwilliam's Virginal Book' 15th century.
