The TV series Vikings was bad about this. They have the same Vikings who sacked Lindisfarn in 1792 also sacking Paris nearly 70 years later. They have Ragnar and Rollo as brothers and they weren't even contemporaries. Then there is a battle scene where Sami people fight alongside Vikings using blowguns with poison darts. Pure fantasy.
