Bonnie Wade's book on the music of India describes how this works in their classical scene. You are supposed to make clearly audible appreciative noises - but you only do it when the performers have done something genuinely remarkable. Just calling out to express generic approval or as a "look at me" is considered gauche.

I like the idea of making performances unrecordable - unique moments that only live on in memory.
