I did my own lookup re the steroids and the sense I took from my gleanings was that: it is a real thing but it
a) as you said, requires prompt treatment
b) why it works is unknown, and
c) usually applies when the source of hearing damage is unknown.

I did pass your info to my friend.
I like the idea of having the instrument with you.
