This song appears in "The Rivers of America Songbook" copyright 1942 by Ferrar and Rhinehart publishers. The song itself was in the public domain in 1942, so probably Nineteenth Century in origin. The "Cherokee" riverboat is the means of escape in the version printed in the book, set with minor harmonies. It's a good one!
