You're right, Stilly, though I think I got the information by following a lead ~~down the rabbit hole~~ in Wikipedia the other month. It's not volume you need to create great static pressure, just height and gravity; from memory, that trick was used in mining in antiquity. --- Gotcha: Ruina montium, linked from the Pascal's Barrel reference.
