Just today found this, while re-reading the book; it's from a section about Albert Einstein's time at the Institute for Advanced Studies (Princeton), and his friendship with Kurt Gödel (he of the Incompleteness Theorem). Apologies for length, but context is all. Einstein and Gödel hit it off immediately. As Einstein said, he would go to the office "just for the privilege of walking home with Kurt Gödel." When Gödel fell ill, Einstein came and looked after him. When Gödel applied for American citizenship and was about to be sworn in, he found what he perceived was a logical inconsistency in the American Constitution that would allow the country to descend into tyranny. Einstein stepped in and went with Gödel to prevent him from sabotaging his own citizenship ceremony. -- Pedro G Ferreira: The Perfect Theory, p77
Full disclosure: Pedro was a colleague and friend of mine, and gave me the copy I'm re-reading. One of these days, I'll have to ask him where he got all that from, and in particular whether anybody has documented what that "logical inconsistency" may have been. In the light (or darkness) of current events, we may have need of that information.
