Bobby O'Brien Lyr Req: Far Away in Australia (9) Lyr Add: DONEGAL DANNY and FAR AWAY IN AUSTRALIA 28 Apr 97

Hi!

The words to "DONEGAL DANNY" are:

I remember the night when he came in from the wintry cold and damp,
A giant of a man in an oilskin coat and a bundle that told he was a tramp.
He stood at the bar and called a pint then turned and gazed at the fire.
"On a night like this to be safe and dry is my one and only desire."

CHORUS: So here's to those who are dead and gone,
The friends I loved so dear.
And here's to you, and I bid you adieu.
Say Donegal Danny's been here, me boys.
Donegal Danny's been here.

Then in a voice that was hushed and low he said, "Listen and I'll tell you a tale:
How a man of the sea became a man of the road and vowed he never more would sail.
I fished out of Hope and Killybegs, Ardglass and Baltimore.
But the cruel sea has beaten me and I'll end my days on the shore. CHO.

"That fateful night in the wind and the rain, we set sail from Killybegs town.
There were five of us from Donegal, and one from County Down.
We were fishermen who worked the sea and never counted the cost,
But I never thought ere that night was done, that my five friends would all be lost. CHO.

"Then the storm had broke and it drove the boat to the rocks about 10 miles from shore.
As we fought the tide we hoped inside we'd see our homes once more.
Then we struck a rock and hauled the bow and all of us knew that she'd go down,
So we jumped right into the icy sea and prayed to God we wouldn't drown.

But the raging sea was rising still as we struck out for the land,
And she fought with all her cruelty to claim that gallant band.
By St. John's Point at the early morn I dragged myself on the shore.
And I cursed the sea for what she'd done and vowed I'd sail no more. CHO.

Ever since that night I've been on the road travellin' and tryin' to forget
The awful night I lost all my friends. I see their faces yet.
And often at night when the sea is high and the rain is tearing at my skin,
I hear the cry of drowning men blowing over on the wind. CHO.

FAR AWAY IN AUSTRALIA

"Sweetheart, I'm bidding you fond farewell," murmured a youth one day.
"I'm off to a new land my fortune to try, and I'm ready to sail away."

CHO: Far away in Australia soon will fate be kind
And I will be ready to welcome the lass, the girl I left behind.

"Must we be parted?" his fairer one cried. "I cannot let you go."
"Still I must leave you," the young man replied, "but for only awhile you know." CHO.

"Whether in success or failure I will always be true.
Proudly each day in that land far away I'll be building a home for you." CHO.

Daily she waits at the old cottage gate, watching the whole day through,
Till that sweet message comes over the wave and in the New World they're joined as two. CHO.

Hope it helped :)
