Song was written by John Shiels (he mentions himself in the last verse). As a child, Shiels witnessed some of the events of the 1798 rebellion. He lived in Droghda for most of his life, dieing around 1870. The triple rhymes are very typical of 18th C. poetry in Irish - and were much used in English also, in both traditions (see "The Orange Maid of Sligo", in the DT, for example). Regards
