Hello all, I'm planning to write a story that is set in the American Civil War, and since it's one of my favourite songs I'd like to quote "The Lily of the West" in it - the version Joan Baez sang, whose melody resembles "The Lakes of Pontchartrain" (my songbook only says this version is from Ohio). Does anyone know if it was known there and then? (Somebody stated in the forum that it made its first appearance in the 1830s, but that was in Ireland if I'm not mistaken.) Thanks in advance!
