Rich, "the Rumps" might indeed refer to the hindquarters of a horse, but capitalized, likely refers to the Republicans. The song was likely composed by a Democrat (Johnson was a Democrat, added to Lincoln's 1864 ticket to hold some Democrat votes against McClelland). And, although I'm glad Johnson wasn't convicted, the speaker in the song lost my sympathy with his snide remark about "Sambo and his Race." An unpleasant bit of history, that. --seed
