I guess I should clarify my question. Has anyone encountered any field recordings using a lap dulcimer the pre-dated Jean Ritchie's introduction of the instrument to urban audiences? And as a secondary question, does anyone know when the dulcimer got its frets? Seems to me that old-style noting (with a noter) would have worked just fine without frets.
