"The Long Steel Rail" by Norm Cohen has 29 pages of the history of this song beginning with "The Ship that Never Returned" by Henry Clay Work whose tune was later used for "The Wreck of Old 97". By the way, this tune was also used for the hit song of the late 1950s, "MTA".
