The whole concept strikes me as pretty ridiculous, and I can't imagine going out to see the imitators, whether they were doing Elvis, the Beatles, or Shania. But there's all kinds of crap that sells, so it doesn't surprise me that this does too.
The one-man shows (Hal Holbrook doing Mark Twain, etc.) seem somewhat more legitimate to me. I sense that there is more creativity involved, in that the actors are presenting a character and projecting a personality, rather than simply aping someone's stage mannerisms while striving for perfect reproduction of the music. It's hard for me to articulate the distinction, but I feel that there is one.
