I think the words fit the tune of 'The Old Mans Song', fellow Midlanders might remember this sung by Johnnie Squire in the folk-clubs around Derbyshire in the late sixties and seventies. (At the turning of the century, I was a lad of five, My Pa went off the fight the Boers and never came back alive, My Ma was left to bring us up, no charity she'd seek, So she wasked and scrubbed and scraped along on seven and six a week. Etc, etc.)
