I think the site whose link I posted has the actual copyrighted lyrics, and it says "wait on the corner," so I guess that's what it is. That's what I've always heard on the Leroy Van Dyke recording. Funny how the same lyrics can be heard differently by different listeners. "They have slain the Earl of Murray And Lady Mondegreen" (layd him on the green) (The Bonny Earl of Murray, Child Ballad #181) Concerning why C&W singers get sucked into adulterous relationships, in my opinion they don't do so any more than anyone else, they just like to sing about it.
