I remember a choral thing we sang in primary school, the refrain to which was "Way down, way down, way down yonder in the corn field". It featured the line "Some folks say that a Tramp won't steal/But I caught a couple in my corn field." The Tramp was a real figure of terror in the rural 19th century, because they were frequently tradeless and desperate veterans. I wonder when "nigger" changed to "tramp", or whether it was always code. |
