I play a special Halloween set every year, and throw in as many murder ballads as I can: The Cruel Mother The Knoxville Girl The Long Black Veil The Housewife's Lament Willow Garden Father's Grave The Ship That Never Returned Next Week Sometime ...... and on and on. bluegrass is a great source for these tunes; perhaps my favorite this year is Monroe's "the little girl and the dreadful snake"
