I think Rabbi Hartman makes some good points, and I mostly agree with him. But as regards the shooting war that we're currently engaged in, I think this war is primarily about terrorism, not about pluralistic religions. If the fanatics had not taken over planes and crashed them into buildings, killing thousands of innocent people, we would have been content to leave them unmolested, regardless of their religious beliefs.
However, wars do have a way of effecting rapid social change, and I have no doubt that this is occurring, and will continue to occur. We can only hope that, in addition to destroying terrorist networks (our principle war aim), this war will foster a new spirit of pluralism in the Islamic world, and a greater respect for human rights and dignity in all parts of the world.
