Well, it might help to know what notes you can play on the Highland pipes... most sets will only allow (nominal notes because GHB chanters play B flat where I've said A)low G natural, low A, B, C sharp, D, E, F sharp, high G natural, high A. Some sets will also allow C and/or F naturals but only with the right reed.
It's more than likely your piping chum just isn't used to this style of playing yet - as George says it's amazing what you can do with such a limited range instrument if you know what sounds good. :-)
