Pete Seeger's book is great: it started me off on banjo.
Its weakness is that it covers a lot of styles with not much depth, so its best use is to help you find what style you want to pursue, and give you an understanding of how the characteristic sounds are made. When you know what you want to do I'd get a book specialising in that style, and get the right hand technique sorted for one style before trying another.
