Children & young people are involved in folk music, only a lot of then just don't know it!!!
Guide / Scout Camp fire's Rugby clubs, The CCF! All have particular folk songs they sing, not to mention 1st school music lessons
I don't think I ever entered a folk club untill a year ago (when i was 20)
but as a child I'd sing sea shanties out sailing with my family, and other songs around the home, @ 1st school (5yrs~9Yrs) we learnt a few folk songs in music lessons, + the was an after school country dancing club. (my lasting memory of which is doing 'heel - toe' in the playground outside the frount porch, & a compertition on a sweltering hot day in Warham) not to mention singing on long car journeys... I later went to a country dancing club with my parents, + Learnt many songs both at Brownies & Guides, especially at camp & am now passing those songs on to a new generation of girls, + the odd toddler when I go out on 'placement' to a nursery.
If the music's there it will trickle through,
but most off all dont be shcked when we doo show up, & dont presume we all feel the need to be hip... Just accept us as ourselves
