Marcus Black Wolf Billy Bragg takes on the Jubilee (20) RE: BS: Billy Bragg takes on the Jubilee 03 May 02

Fortunato,

They decided to do some of the buses in a nice new gold colour for the Jubilee year - they should keep it I think - But then as I don't like the colour red I would say that. Paul McCartney's song fell under a particular section of English law whereby certain songs (or other material) liable to cause political unrest can be banned from been performed - It's not invoked much any more mind you, but if I was to sing an Irish Republican song while wandering around East London the police could arrest me in theory. Seamus Heaney is a famous Irish poet (also a Nobel prize winner) who is an ambigous republican -in that he supports Irish re-unification but not via violence. I don't think we Irish are pro or anti-Jubilee really, personally it doesn't matter one way or the other to me.

I thought the biggest waste of money in Britain on a celebration was the ill-fated Millenium Dome of recent years myself to be honest.
