In my experience, the Baby Taylors are pretty decent instruments for what they are, a good value, and I haven't experienced the tuning problems mentioned earlier. I would go with a Baby Taylor, strung with light-gauge steel strings, and be prepared to switch to lighter strings (extra lights or silk-and-steel) if there's a need. If your daughter is already "strumming away" on a mandolin, maybe she can deal with sore fingertips -- a mandolin will certainly produce them. Good luck.
