GURA TU MO BHEAN CHOMUINN
le Ian Mac Lachlainn à Aird Iodail 'san Earraghàidheal
from the singing of Karen Nic Mhathain (Matheson)

Gura tu mo bhean chomuinn a chagair 'sa ghaoil,
Tha an dualchas ud againn bhith gu h-amaideach faoin,
Cha b'fhada leam seachdain a bhith an taice ri m'ghaol,
'S mi nach iarradh de leapa a bhith againn ach fraoch.

Ged a tha mi dol dhachaigh tha mo thasgaidh 'nam dhéidh,
'S mi gun aithneachadh mo chruinneag ann an cruinneachadh cheud;
Beul meachair nì mànran, cùl fàinneach, donn réidh,
Mala chaol mar an iteig thig à sgiath an eòin lèith.

Fìor thoiseachd an t-seamhraidh ghabh mi geall ort is miadh,
B'fheàrr dhomh-sa 'san àm sin nach do theann mi ris riamh,
Aig a' mheud thug mi ghaol dhut gun do chaochail mo neul,
'S b'fheàrr anochd bhith riut sìnte na mìle bò chiar.

Dol Di Dòmhnaich do'n Chlachan gur e 's fasan dhomh bròn,
'Nuair chí mi mo leannan is fear eile 'na còir,
'S ann a théid iad orm seachad gu dol asteach do 'n taigh-òsda,
'S bidh esan – 's gum faod e – a' sìor fhaotainn a pòig.

Mi bhith dìreadh a' bhruthaich thàinig tuisleadh 'nam cheum,
Mi bhith teàrnadh a' mhonaidh is mo ghunna fo m' sgèith;
Tha m'inntinn fo mhulad, làn tuiridh 'nad dhéidh,
'S nach iarrainn de 'n t-saoghal ach a rùn bhith riut réidh.

Cha d'thug thu dhomh reusan air cur sìos air do chliù,
Ged a bhithinn 'gad iarraidh ò do bheulaibh gu d' chùl,
Bha thu sìobhalta riamh rium 's bha do bhriathran rium ciùin,
'S bidh mo chridhe an tòir ort ged bhitheadh tu pòsda aig triùir.

The liner notes from Ar Canan 's Ar Ceòl indicate that this song dates to the late 1700s. John MacLachlan of Ardtittle, Argyll, loved a young lady from Dalmally (Clachan an Dìseart/Kirkton of Dysart), though their love affair was ultimately ended. There's an Uist version of this song that mentions Bràigh Innis Ruairidh, just outside of Benbecula. It's a good example of people localising a song they've acquired.

Btw, folks (Aodh!), please feel free to correct spelling errors! I'll post the English translation from the liner notes when I get some time, prob'ly Sunday. Been rehearsing for a couple of days....
