GUEST,fred BS: Favorite Sayings, part 2 (38) RE: BS: Favorite Sayings, part 2 11 Jul 02

My grandmother--Come on out from back down up in under there. (She has a way with prepositions.) My other grandmother used to talk about ne'er do wells who went around "drinkin and swarpin," but my mother couldn't tell me what "swarpin" was. I need to know, hope to preserve the lost art of swarpin. Because, as Mae West said "whenever I have to choose between two evils, I take the one I haven't tried yet." A good man is hard to define. To each his own, or it's equivalent. Conceptual artist Jenny Holtzer had a bunch of sayings on posters and things, and I once won a bet that I could re-arrange them into better, truer, sayings. A few mixed sayings were "sex differences are nothing to be proud of" and "the land is living on borrowed time". Yesterday someone asked about the phrase "spooning" and my friend John told him it just meant snuggling front to back. Later I explained that that's what we told John, because he's a little young yet, but spooning is actually... well, think of the dirtiest thing you can. It's still a little dirtier than that. I'm afraid it actually involves a spoon. But don't tell John. I like to tell my kids warped versions of sayings so that they will hate me for it later. My daughter wonders why I work at night, I tell her "because Rome wasn't built in the day". fred
