GUEST,high'an'lonesome Help- Stand for Steel Drum (6) RE: Help- Stand for Steel Drum 31 Jul 02

I played in a seetl band for four years and we made all of our stands quite easily. It depends on the type of pan, but I assume it is a lead pan since it sounds like there is just one of them. We used metal tubing and basically made an "H" using joints and elbows and such. For it to remain upright (pretty important)you need to make feet that arew aligned perpendicularly to the rest of the stand. we would use a pipe bender to make a 90 degree bend, and do two of these for each side, four total. these were then drilled and bolted on to the bottom of the stand. to attach the pan to the stand we used rater stiff wire and made a hook for each side of the pan. ours had holes drilled into them for this purpose, dont know if yours does. if not I woud be VERY careful about doing this myself as to not affect the tone. after attaching the wire hooks to the pan, simply drop the hook end into the top of the stand tubes and your done. I have no idea if you are able to picture what I have described, but this is THE popular setup and I am sure you can find pics on the net somewhere that should help explain things a little better. oh yeah, steel pans are an amazing instrument with one of the most pleasing sounds. it is impossible to stand still when listening to a decent steel band!!!!
