When I first had to come up with a contract for performances, I went to a friend (my musical 'mentor'), and asked her about it... She suggested I add in that the temperature had to be above 60 degrees where we played. How odd, I thought... She also said I should specify that we require 'adequate shelter' from inclement weather or direct sunlight. Of course, how silly! I thought... Now, several years later, after playing on a front porch of a historical house in a thunderstorm, with a HANGING QUILT for protection from the elements... ...after playing in a historic mill where the temp never topped 50--I swear! We could see our breath the whole time--and they had *wanted* us out in the gazebo, but we persuaded them that most folks wouldn't want to stand out there and listen... ...after playing at a street festival where the entertainment director wanted us on the sidewalk, in direct sun, in 94-degree weather, in hoop skirts and historical garb... ...our contract now states that we need the temperature to be at least 60 degrees F, and we need adequate protection from inclement weather and direct sunlight! (for any gig that I think might need such guidelines--mainly outdoor/historic-type events). Denise:^)
