Just perusing this thread again, and noticed 'Sarah the Flute's' comments about being paid... (cash vs. check) Can I add this point: I *hate* it when an organizer (I see this more at private functions, BTW) makes you come up and ASK for your money. It makes me want to grab them by the collar, and get right in their face, and holler, "HEY!! Does your boss make you come up and beg for YOUR money every week?!? Well, I don't want to, either!" ...but, of course, I don't do anything of the sort. ;^) Us folkies are SOOO nice...! Also--'Guest Claire' mentioned writing out an 'agreement' for non-paying gigs, writing in a fee, crossing it out, & writing 'WAIVED.' I totally agree! Not only does it make it quite obvious that you are donating something of value, it makes it less likely that they'll tell others about this "FREE" group that they got to play for their event. I do the same thing if I reduce a fee for a special event or group--I write in the 'normal' fee, and then put, beside it, "SPECIAL DISCOUNT -- 25%," or whatever applies. It's worked well for me!
