Senate Bill 742, excuse me. I just went to the Portland, Oregon local news, KGW.com and registered and read the local story. Long questionairre, so here's the first part of the story:

Terrorism bill challenged at hearing

03/24/2003

By KGW and AP Staff

More than 100 people crowded an Oregon Senate committee hearing on Monday to challenge a tough anti-terrorism bill as unnecessary and vague.

The state bill would create a new class of terrorists and punish them with a life sentence. It would expand the ability of law enforcement to conduct surveillance and keep files on groups that opponents say are guity of nothing but their political affiliation.

Some of those who spoke Monday worried that acts of civil disobedience would land them in jail. Others said the bill would infringe on their right to free speech.

"I think we already have laws on the books which proscribe… criminal conduct and violent conduct," said Bo Adan of Eugene. "Why do you need to have some sort of omnibus, all-encompassing bill which would create a different and other crime?"

Sen. John Minnis, R-Gresham, a 24-year veteran of law enforcement and chairman of the committee, sponsored the bill. "I think there's a lot of paranoia that is brought up in this discussion that is without merit," he said.

The bill's definition of a terrorist has been watered down somewhat, but not enough to please a wide range of opponents.

The amended bill defines a terrorist as someone who "participates in or carries out any violent act that the person knows, or reasonably should know, could result in the death or serious physical injury of a person and is intended by at least one participant to substantially disrupt or destroy," assembly, commerce, transportation, educational or government institutions.

-------

A person 'reasonably should know' a 'violent act' 'could result' in a death. That's riding a bike into the side of a car. 'by at least one participant'...that's just one person in a crowd of a hundred thousand. And if the bike spill causes a car to screech to a stop, that has disrupted 'transportation'. So...all the demonstrators could be arrested as terrorists, and once the manpower is there to do that kind of thing, it will be done. And this is MANDATORY lifetime sentencing. None of that 'I was just passing by on my way to the store.' If you're in the crowd, you are sentenced. And the last paragraph says this is the WATERED DOWN definition of terrorism. No telling how broad it was before. This thing will die, but for anyone to even THINK about submitting this in America shows how far we have fallen. Minnis is a stone-cold traitor.

You know, Ebbie, instead of telling other people they're being led around by the nose, you need to start doing some research. You said you are from Alaska...did you know the North Koreans shot a missile at Alaska? The media has hushed it up, but pieces of the missile were found. Did you know that? And if that happened, why are we beating up on the cavemen in Iraq whose BIGGEST missile was outlawed because it could shoot 95 miles?
