How true, how true! Just yesterday, my daughter (15) called me up at work with the burning question "Who did the song Drift Away?" She'd heard the band Uncle Kracker do it, but (bless her) knew it wasn't the original, so with my help she tracked down the Dobie Gray version. Kids also get exposure to "old" tunes (admittedly, more pop than folk) from the use of the songs in movies, especially flicks that target their age groups. Can't tell you how many times this has happened. My favorite, though, was about 10 years or so ago, when my then-much-younger daughter, who had heard me and my partner sing CSNY's "Teach Your Children" countless times, heard the original on the car radio and said, innocently but with full conviction, "Hey Dad, they're playing yours and Bob's song." Another father-daughter moment. Poobs
