For real pilgrimages -- going to a place associated with some terrible martyrdom -- The Lorraine Motel in Memphis; Ford's Theatre in Washington; the "grassy knoll" in Dallas. Except for particularly spectacular crimes like Wounded Knee, you'll have to rely on local historians to identify sites of Indian massacres and the local lynching tree. But then, for obvious reasons, they don't generally like to talk about that. Walking one of the many civil war battlefields is worth doing. |
