Thanks Walrus, I'd come across references to "Porcupine drill" before, but no descriptions. Given the more than uncomfortable nature of uniform in those days, with leather stocks, bulky and akward equipment, powdered and queued hair, badly made shoes or boots, muskets over feet long weighing heaps, etc etc, it's no small wonder they didn't go through live loading drill, otherwise there'd have been a few Drill Sergeants less...... |
