There has been a lot a discussion recently, regarding the apparent lack of young people to keep the folk tradition alive. Today I was at Sidmouth Folk Festival and it was a joy to see young fiddlers (one aged about 10yrs and the other, I would say about 12yrs) playing their instruments, for the pleasure of passers by, on the seafront. The younger lad was giving a tentative solo performance, while the second lad was accompanied by his father, on concertina. Later in the day a third young lad, in his teens, was to be seen playing guitar in a style that would have given Jimmy Hendrix a run for his money. If they are as good as this now, what will they be like in five or ten years time?
