I think the old vaudeville routine was "Mr. Gallagher and Mr. *Shehan*". I have a tape of two performers (not named Gallagher and Shehan) doing the bit. I've never heard the Australian advertisement for furniture polish, but I think it is a good bet that it was an homage (or is that *a* homage?) to the old routine, as georgeward suggests.
