The problem is that many, many on the right and far right DO take her seriously. They take Rush Limnaugh seriously, but hell, Coulter makes Limbaugh sound like a voice of sane tranquility. For that reason, the rest of us better take her seriously. Remember, to extend the analogy, that folks didn't take Hitler seriously...before long it was "oops -- there went Poland...". The Franken book, with all of this attendant publicity is a start to finding some fairness and balance...
