this is the only comment I have been able to find on 'cabinet'

It is thought to be called a "cabinet" because its unknown originator kept his blender in a kitchen cabinet. Also mixers were often stored in square wooden cabinets.

I wonder though - given that Rhode Island has had at time heavy influxes of Cape Verdeans and Portuguese whether it might be a loan-word corrupted out of recognition?
