Barbara, she was ill, and her superior decided her health would improve outside the monastic life. She had been given anti-depressants while in the monastery, and they were causing panic attacks. She went to another doctor after she left the community, and said, "if you think these tablets are the cause, I'm ready to stop taking them."....'I gave them up that very day in Cambridge and have never touched them or their like since. There was no repeat of the stark panic'.
I always wondered why, until I read this book, why she was not better known in the US. But, since she was on contract to DECCA, and they didn't think her traditional songs were commercial enough, they didn't release her recordings here.
