best bet I know of, for mass produced low end banjos is Deering Good Time. It's an amazing little instrument, gerat sound, good neck - well built. Deering doesn't make a bad banjo!

Of course if Deering can make a real banjo for cheap, others will too - so keep looking. But you cannot go wrong with a Deering.
