Scots' history from that time is very cloudy and I would say the only things that can be said to be uncontestable about the song are that a battle atook place near Stirling and the armies were on opposite sides of the Bannock Burn; that Bruce was the leader of the Scots and Edward the English; the Scots won against a superior force through the use of ground and that it all happened over two days in June, 1314.

Bear in mind that the winners usually write the history and it is in their interest to exagerate the size of the force that they beat. All I care about is that subsequently, Scotland was pretty much recognized as a nation (read the translation of the Declaration of Arbroarh and if you are from the USA, compare it to your constitution written by presbytereans some four hundred years later).
