Two books that currently top my list of favorites are:

Mrs. Mike by The Freedmans
and
Red Water by Judith Freedman

As a child, I think Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time and C.S. Lewis' The Lion, Witch and The Wardrobe are most memorable.
