There have been several children's stories based on this folk tale--including "Something From Nothing" by Phoebe Gilman. When I tell this story (Which starts with a beloved blanket) I start with a piece of paper colored to look like the fabric and I cut it to resemble each item in the story. I'll have to learn the song to add when story telling.
