One of the best ways to write songs is to stop and listen to what is happening around you. Listen to the way people talk about their lives, the cadence of their phrases. If you want to write about something that happened in the past, read as much as you can about it, and then let it become a part of you. Don't rush to get words on paper. Many of sngs come unbidden.
