Sheeesh. Can't we take anything at face value? It sounds like Mr. Jindal is already well recognized and established as an up and coming political figure and that this setback won't be a permanent thing. When your opponent garners 52% of the vote a loss is hardly losing by a landslide. Implying racism/jingoism seems a bit of a premature stretch.

Also note that Jindal has "close ties to the White House"- might not that be a factor in some people's distrust?

"But Ms. Blanco appealed to many voters because of her solid record of public service." That seems a valid reason to vote for her, if the other candidate does not have that kind of record.
