Re the sub-kilt clothing, Scotland is notorious for its midges. Now either (a) the midges have got more venomous since the kilt stopped being a standard item of clothing, (b) Scots wore underwear back then, or (c) this was a form of Scottish population control by making a man's bits too sore to do anything with!
