I wish to defend Jimmy Carter to the ... well, not to the death, but perhaps to the minor injury? Carter wasn't inept -- he lacked the street smarts to play dirty in DC, and they ate him alive. He was, if anything, too nice, too honest, too sincere. On the other hand, he came out of his presidency into a position that suits him perfectly, at which he is extremely good, and to which he adds class.
