In some countries 'bar' is a musical term, 'measure' in the USA I think. e.g. in 4/4 time there are four beats to the bar.

I walked past a bar once that had four deadbeats in it. Three looked pretty crotchetty (sorry, another non USA musical term), the one on the floor was definitely having a rest.
