Errr... Quick, pedantic, revisit:

I was suggesting it was the Latin "bi-" (~ = two/double) that caused the confusion ... I do know that "di-" can mean two/double from the Greek "dis" ... but the term diatonic uses the Greek "dia" (~ = through).
