Subject: RE: What was Lee Hays really like...?
Irwin Silber thoroughly lambasted The Weavers in the bygone Sing Out! because they copyrighted their arrangements. this came up on another thread awhile back - In fact, Sing Out! even put out its own "group," 2 balck and 2 white folks, to correct the political incorrectness of a white group singing Black music. Dropped like a stone, I believe.

and Barbara Dane (Mrs. Irwin Silber) once called Bessie Smith a sellout - I heard her do it onstage. That hit me funny atthe time. Hopefully they have both mellowed, tho' I must say that Irwin left a lot of ruffled feathers in the Chicago left when he passed through during his new-party-building phase - 70's? 80's?
