I think on the one point that there was probably a dividing line between people with an opinion and the sell-out types. I think some of the people on both sides of any issue, and it was certainly true during the McCarthy/HUAC/blacklist days, survived because they remained true to whatever belief and didn't "wimp-out" from either direction. This is probably true about any "hard decision" time as Rick referred to it. I guess it comes down to being able to sleep, if not make a living or whatever else.
